The Georges Collinet Story
This project is funded in part by a generous grant from DC Humanities.
This project is a documentary film about Georges Collinet, also known as Maxi Voom Voom, a long time DC resident and Cameroonian-French TV broadcaster, known for hosting radio shows with international reach. In the 1960s he hosted his first show about African pop music on Voice of America, which catapulted him to TV broadcast stardom. He’s been hosting the radio show AfroPop worldwide since 1988.
According the AfroPop, Collinet's show was distributed by PRI Public Radio International to over 100 stations in the U.S., and his award-winning program takes listeners and web users to intriguing musical destinations—Senegal, Tanzania, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria, Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Colombia, Madagascar, South Africa, the Dominican Republic, and beyond. The New York Times’s Jon Pareles called the program and its companion website, afropop.org, “a well spring of African and world culture,” adding, “no other organization I know does so well in helping it reach the listeners it deserves.”
Through Georges's production company based in Washington D.C, he has produced many music projects. Georges has been awarded the Peabody Award from the Ford Foundation. He is widely considered the best-known and most famous broadcaster on the African continent.
